A Birthday Celebration and Centennial Event, featuring Mike McGriff of Tavern Books. Mike will present and discuss Winterward, William Stafford’s doctoral thesis, recently released by Tavern Books.

In his Bibliographic Note, Stafford Archivist Paul Merchant writes: “Of the thirty-five poems in Winterward, eighteen were composed during the two years [Stafford] spent in the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop between Fall 1950 and Summer 1952. Seven were written in Oregon between leaving he Workshop and submission of the dissertation in February 1954. The remaining ten were already in Stafford’s files when he arrived in Iowa.”

Kim Stafford wrote: “Once you open Winterward, it’s like a literary detective story.”

Join the discussion and discover the importance of this, the last major work written by Stafford to be published.

Readings and discussions will follow the presentation. Bring a favored Stafford poem or one of your own written in the spirit of William Stafford. Light refreshments will be served.
