CRAFTY: WILLIAM STAFFORD AND THE ART OF ARTLESSNESS
Was William Stafford “crafty?” Was he “skilled in underhandedness, deviousness, or deception?” Yes, but only in the sense that he was able to make his art seem artless.
Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita, has six full-length books of poetry, most recently Understory, from Lost Horse Press in 2013. Published in many journals and anthologies, she was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, and the recipient of the 2006 Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts.
Join Paulann in an interactive exploration of a few aspects of William Stafford’s art. We’ll look at a number of Stafford poems and discuss them in terms of the craft that might have gone into their making. We’ll be alert to the ways in which we might apply such craft to our own work, ways we might become “craftier” too.
