Born the year World War I began, poet William Stafford spent World War II in a camp for conscientious objectors. Throughout his life, he remained convinced that wars simply don’t work. His writings and work as a pacifist are captured in the documentary “Every War Has Two Losers.” Deschutes Public Library is hosting a complimentary screening of the film as part of the library’s “Know Stafford” month of celebrations. The screening is free and open to all.

“Every War Has Two Losers” is directed by Haydn Reiss and based on the journals of Stafford. Despite being told that war is inevitable, Stafford disagreed. “Are there other ways?” he asked. What were the possibilities reconciliation offered by seeking a greater understanding between nations? Stafford wrestled with these questions in his writing and in his life, believing another way was possible. Using Stafford’s eloquent poetry and prose, the documentary film invites the viewer to reflect on their own ideas regarding war.
